How to measure a patio umbrella

A patio umbrella serves a unique purpose for the outdoor atmosphere of your home. You can use it for the garden, backyard or patio to look beautiful as well as for sun protection. Durable ribs and waterproof canopies in a variety of colors, shapes and sizes, make any patio look more appealing. You can measure your current umbrella size if you are looking to replace the one that you have.

As you can see above, the umbrella “ribs” are the long wood/metal rods that extend from the pole to the edge of the umbrella. Umbrella ribs are used to measure the size of umbrellas.

Step 1

Open the umbrella so that it is fully extended.

Step 2

Measure the top of your umbrella along one of the rib arms. Use a tape measure to measure from the top center to the outside edge.

Step 3

Multiply that number by two. This will give you correct size of your umbrella. Patio umbrellas are measured by their width and not their height.

Step 4

Take another measurement from the base of the umbrella pole to the crank mechanism. This will give you the measurement of the crank height. You need to know this measurement if you are measuring for a patio table.
